If you have a combative heart, it will tend to provoke combative reactions in the others. "By practicing budo [the martial Way] . . . you come to understand that not fighting is the better alternative. This understanding gives birth to the heart of love." Journey to the Heart of Aikido, p. 264. http://journeytoaikido.com/

Love is attachment that has gathered fire. It is silent understanding, joint self-confidence, sharing and compassionate. It is faithfulness through lovely and worst times. It settles for less than excellence and creates allowances for human strengths.

The presence of a combative heart is not the only alternative for achieving the goals. The right direction is possible only in harmony with the other qualities.

Love is one of the greatest things ever! Probably, love and warfare should live in one whole world!

The primary word I-Thou can be spoken only with the whole being. Concentration and fusion into the whole being can never take place through my agency, not can it ever take place without me. I become through my relation to the Thou; and as I become the I, I say Thou. All real living is meeting.
    —Buber, I and Thou
